Podcasts Part 2: Science Fiction or Satanic Fiction?
In my last article I introduced you to Apple Computer’s iPod. I revealed that this harmless looking device comes with an evil secret surprise: “Podcasts”.
In this article and forthcoming episodes I will attempt to explore these podcasts and give you an impression of just how dangerous they are. I’m also going to talk about our new petition; a way that concerned readers and parents can put a stop to the podcast problem forever.
Today, I am going to review a podcast called “Escape Pod”, which bills itself as a “Weekly Science Fiction Magazine”? We all know that science fiction is a dangerously corrupting influence on young minds. Science fiction novels can make children nervous and excitable. I have heard many cases of science fiction addicts rejecting authority and embracing “alternative lifestyles”, but how much worse could a science fiction podcast be?
It turns out there is a lot wrong with this series: This podcast is nothing short of depraved filth. It’s content is frequently outlandish. Their stories have resolutions which are often amoral and deliberately designed to evoke messages contrary to the teachings of Christ.
For example the episode entitled “My Friend is a Lesbian Zombie” is a prurient exploration of the occult, and homosexuality. These are both practices offensive to God.

This disturbing story is typical of the unsettling themes embraced by the perverse “science-fiction” authors. Eager for the next fix, science fiction dealers know that they have to provide ever more disturbing “fixes” in order to keep their drug-addicted reader’s attention. This “Escape Pod” is actually the start of a slippery-slope towards eternal damnation.
Even in it’s more reflective moments, this series is clearly offensive to both man and God. For example episode 30 titled “Aliens Love Oranges” is a depressing story in which a young woman is seduced into rejecting her Christian upbringing. She is coaxed into embracing junk-science concepts like the “Big Bang” theory and Evolution.
This disregard for Biblical facts runs through the entire series:
We used the industry standard CAP Alert system to provide an at a glance view of just how dangerous this series is. Scoring a pathetic 8.2 out of a possible 100, this show clearly a danger. By comparison, Mel Gibson’s excellent “The Passion of the Christ” scores a perfect 100.
Should we allow our kids, family and colleagues to listen to this kind of show? Christ commands us to do good deeds on earth, and focus on the next life. At no point did he advocate an onanistic contemplation of godless fantasies. Most Christian book-stores stock a wide range of sober devotional and inspirational tracts. Why then do we need this “Science FIction”?
Can we as responsible Americans allow this sort of thing to continue?

Sir, you are wrong on both counts. The clearly states that the only route to salvation is by letting Christ into your heart. There is no other way to reach God but through him. Anybody who rejects christ is going to hell. I am sorry to be so blunt about it, but that is just the way it is.
Secondly, the Bible commands us to spread the good news and oppose sin wherever we see it. We Christians like to lead by example, but if the example fails then we must use every legislative and moral force to oppose anybody who would oppose God’s will. If that means using force then so be it.
We Republicans are not afraid to take a stand against sin. Why is it that the Democrats are so tolerant?

Your judgment against podcasts is ridiculous. By your logic we should destroy books because there at least one book which leads us to sin. There are explicitly Christian podcasts, not to mention many other podcasts which do not deal with anything more mundane than caring for pets.

As for Christianity being the only true path to “God”, how can you possibly know that it is if the only thing that tells you it is, is Christianity itself? That is a non-logical tautology. You cannot use A to prove B and then use B to prove A.
There is no way for you to ever PROVE that Christianity is even valid unto itself. If it’s so valid, how come you are such a tiny tiny minority? The majority of Christians in this country are actually quite a bit more tolerant and accepting of ALL of “Gods” children than you and the owner of this blog seem to be.
It will be a happy day when your kind (meaning extremist Christians) is completely extinct, since you definitely are going the way of the dinosaurs.

Shelley, you may want to check out podcasting a bit more. I’m one of the original podcasters that started the GodCast Network at http://www.godcast.org. While you are correct that some podcasts are completely immoral and very sinful, others are excellent and glorifying to the Lord.
Churches use RSS and podcasting to deliver sermons; Focus on the Family has a podcast for both FOF, Adventures in Odyssey, and others; Steve Webb at LifeSpring offers incredible wisdom; RevTim, The Living Word, The Klingon Word From The Word, ICMRaw, Harvest Ministries, The IndieHeaven Podcast, The Catholic Insider, need I go on.
Before slamming podcasting as a whole, research it AS A WHOLE; it is a great method of delivering a message … yes it can be used for evil, but it also can and IS being used for much much good.
(Are you aware that the President podcasts his weekly radio addresses?)
(PS: Regarding Steve Eley at Escape Pod, he ALWAYS prefaces his podcasts with a warning if the content is offensive in anyway at all; sexual, religious, violent, etc. Because of the care that he takes to present that warning, I have the option to listen or to bypass that episode … that’s the plus of podcasting … the fast forward and skip functions)
Rick, thanks for your comments. The problem with science fiction is that it is inherantly evil. Science fiction puts dangerous ideas into our children’s minds. Many of these ideas are contrary to the teachings of the Bible. Science fiction is only one step away from junk-science concepts like “The Big Bang”, “Evolution” and “Peak Oil” - surely people have better things to think about?
Many science fiction stories are non-violent, but even so they may be offensive to God. Exposure to science fiction might cause emotional problems later in life. That is why I implore you all not to listen to Escape Pod. It is one of the most dangerous things in the “poddosphere”.
Why would anybody want to read or listen to sci-fi anyway? Most christian book-shops stock a wide range of inspirational and devotional tracts. These cover a wide range of subject matters, and not just space-ships (which is all science fiction is about anyway).
Sure, there are podcasts out that I would find offensive. Although honestly I have not There are web sites, movies and games I find offensive also but your petition isn’t going anywhere. TV and Radio are regulated because they use the airwaves which are owned by the public. Movies, for instance, are not because they are distributed separately. What you really want, or at least the only thing you have a chance of getting is ratings like movies and video games. Most of the podcasts that you would find offensive are marked in iTunes with the “explicit” tag already. I generally avoid those, just because I don’t enjoy them.
But please keep in mind there are also wonderful podcasts out there that are amusing, uplifting, funny. For you I would suggest:

Everytime I read this site I don’t know what say. I have no words. I don’t know If I had to cry or to laugh. Why? Only Jesus is the path to God. (a) This nation was founded on the principle of religious freedom. I am glad that you are finding a way to express your beliefs, but your right to do so does not include the right to prevent others from doing so as well.
(b) There are actually “good christian” science fiction stories out there, so again I think you are flailing your broad brush too quickly.
(c) If you actually practiced Christianity the way all evidence shows Christ meant it to be (i.e. by reading what he actually /said/ in the bible) then you wouldn’t be acting the way you are.
(d) Oh yeah, there are many paths to the divine, not just the narrow path taught by Christianity which even condems other Christians if they don’t subscribe to the one, tiny, narrow path that any given Christian has chosen to buy into as “The Way”

And I’m a Bible-believing fundamentalist non-denominational Republican. God has an imagination. We should, too. Kathy Tyres is a prime example with her Firebird science fiction-fantasy book series. So is Left Behind, which if you weren’t paying attention also falls under the fantasy genre. Saying a genre is sinful is like saying guns kill people. People kill people, and just because some of the content is ungodly does not mean we should throw the baby out with the bath water.

Our modern society today has been advanced to the point where we are much safer as a whole. This is due to forward thinkers. It is because of science fiction that we imagine our future. Science fiction gives us airplanes. Science fiction gives us automobiles. Science fiction gives us medicine. I challenge you to give up everything that science fiction has done for you.

I was brought up a christian and lived that way for many years. I gave it up when I finally discovered that christianity has nothing to do with acceptable behaviour, and everything to do with control and power. Hello there. I am disappointed by the lack of intellect that either side of this discussion has employed to reach their individual conclusions. I would hope that all of you would approach future discussions with the tenets of whatever your religion that best exemplifies why you believe in that religion. Christ tells us to love one another, and I believe would encourage intelligent discourse between us. Paganism encourages us to approach different ideas with understanding and care.
For those of us who believe, “If it harms none, do what you will,” I feel attacking the writers of this blog is not in correspondence with such a rede, nor do I see what you plan to accomplish by the words you use. Words, in most magickal systems are powerful and should never be used lightly. Be sure of your intent and the consequences before taking action.
For those of us who believe: “Judge not, that you be not judged. For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and the measure you give will be the measure you get. Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye?” Perhaps you may want to clean all the logs out of your eyes. Christopher Walker - Not all religions make exclusive claims. I’m a neopagan witch and I believe that (almost) every religion (I hold no truck with Satanism, worship of pure evil is wrong even if there is no such thing as pure evil as I believe) is seeing the truth, just not the whole truth, and most are trying to say that their limited point of view is everything. It isn’t. My greatest wish is that we could all just get along.

And since reading the ill-informed and downright misleading piece on your blog about Escape Pod I finally got off my butt and donated $50 dollars so that they can keep bringing us some of the finest speculative short fiction on the planet.
When God made us in his image, He gave us the ability to imagine and create. Steve Eley and the authors on Escape Pod are sharing their God-given gifts to entertain and enrich our lives. Some may not fit exactly into everyone’s belief system but if that belief system cannot survive a 25 minute exposure to another way of thinking it won’t survive even the smallest of real life trials and tribulations.

Good article. Enough has been said about the dangers of podcasting. But I think more needs to be said about the dangers of Science Fiction.
First, it’s obvious: Science Fiction is about science, which brought us evils ranging from Evolution to Global Warming. No decent literature genre would promote that! Now if only there were such a thing as Faith Fiction… The fact that there isn’t proves that Science Fiction is evil in itself. No good Christian or Republican would touch that trash.
Second, look at the disinformation Scienc Fiction spreads! Almost all Science Fiction is based on the assumption that the Earth is a sphere (or so I’ve heard), and not only that, that it floats in a huge vacuum which it shares with thousands of other spheres, just like the Earth! Not only is this completely and obviously ridiculous, it also contradicts what is said in the Holy Scripture! This in itself should be enough to convince you that all Science Fiction is satanic and must be avoided at all costs.
I know I’m a bit late, but please spread the word to warn all good Christians about this cancer growing in our society! Amen.

this sentence by tristian made 2 things immidiatly po into my head:
1) that he thinks that christian inpirational books are fiction thinks he thinks they can be read instead of sci fi, which is just a step away from saying the bible is a fiction bed time story - and a bad one - and
2) that this guy doesnt know what sci fi is
any one who sais that sci fi is all about space ships is so ingorant i would think he is living in a 2 by 2 meters wide box which is completely sealed from the outside world. it is not our fauclt you only read - although i do not think you can read i think your comments are written for you you just can barely say them and someone prepaby even corrects the bad wording and phrasing- it isnt our fautl you only read bad sci fi novels and only watch B rated movies.

I had to resond to this with a quote:
