This is big bullshit. Windows Vista Server is still under development.

And even if it was true, it wouldn’t be faster, more secure or more reliable than a Linux, FreeBSD or Solaris hosting. Don’t believe me, see for yourself:

Oh Lord. You are wrong! Very wrong! We are now hosted on Vista and it’s Heaven! Much faster!

Jack Ripoff, your ignorance is astounding!

As you know I am a Microsoft MVP, and one of the benefits of membership is access to the latest Beta software. I’ve got to hand it to Microsoft - this Vista Server Edition is rock-solid and just the sort of thing that will keep those pesky hackers at bay forever!

  4. religiousrespect April 23rd, 2007 4:35 am

Its a new server, its bound to have bugs Tristan.
In all respect, I would hope you would wait for it to be fully secure in a few months, because now “the linux hackers” are going to pounce.

  5. Sam Johnston April 23rd, 2007 5:06 am

Linux hackers! They aren’t smart enough to scare Bill Gates… and they certainly aren’t smart enough to scare Jesus. Did you know that He protects this website too? I prayed it, and it happened! All attacks rebuffed! All sin kept far from these pages.
    Thank you Lord!

  6. Shelley April 23rd, 2007 5:21 am

I agree! Linux hackers are mostly some poor perverts that sit at home and download porn.

Nobody can hack Windows Vista hosting! It can’t be done!

    Shelley

  7. Swip April 23rd, 2007 5:25 am

Noone ever hacked any Windows product. NEVER EVER! This cannot be done as Windows is DRM protected.

  8. Aby The Liberal April 23rd, 2007 6:24 am

There is a saying that when someone talks Microsoft and Security in the same sentence it becomes a laugable joke. And your claim of transformation to Vista is a lie. Vista does not support Apache and your site uses rewrite rules based on Mod SSL which is an Apache/Linux plugin. All you have done is use .aspx as an extension of PHP in Wordpress and bingo - foolwed your stupid friends.

  9. bubba April 23rd, 2007 7:34 am

Tristan, does Vista come with Bibles installed and Bible study tools already loaded? This does:
    http://www.ichthux.com/
    Linux for Christians
    Features include:

The current features of Ichthux are:

    * based on Kubuntu 6.06.1 LTS “Dapper Drake”
    * bibletime with multi-language support, using Frank Ruehl rich Hebrew font
    * kio-sword for Bible study integration into Konqueror
    * several Bibles installed by default for English (KJV), Spanish (SPARV), French (LSG) and Hebrew (WLC)
    * Christian console tools: verse, bible-kjv

Windows Vista Server? I think you should change to a real Microsoft hoster. Windows Vista is not ready yet, or still in beta status.
Besides, Microsft advices to use Windows 2003 as server for more secure and reliable hosting. Vista only, when it’s ready, for small situations.

    Jesus is the future,

Shelley > Aby is right. If you want to fulfill our Lord’s desires, install SharePoint Server 2007 on Windows Server 2003.

  13. George April 23rd, 2007 9:11 am

No, Linux is a secure solution…
If you can call it a solution. It is nothing more than an unfinished project from a few hobbyists.

  14. Shelley April 23rd, 2007 9:18 am

    George,
    thanks. You speak the truth!
I just don’t want to rely on some “hobby project” of some drug using hacker type from russia.

We used linux hosting in the very beginning and we had massive downtimes. It was awful!

  15. Kyo April 23rd, 2007 11:24 am

Linux will be never finished because the kernel is more likely to support new technologies; it keeps on changing to improve not like Winbugs.

I used to think XP was bad, now my vista is full of bugs

  16. Proud German April 23rd, 2007 12:29 pm

The Vista Server Software is still under development. WHere have you got it? And are you aware that it has not been bug-tested till now? Seems like STR could get technical difficulties soon…

@Tristan: NOTHING will keep a persistant hacker forever outside your system. To give you a relating qoute: In the race between thicker armor and bigger grenades, the grenades will always ultimately win.

@Swip: Hey, long time no see! To embarass you: Any serious hacker needs about 5 minutes to crack DRM. Including 4 minutes to laugh his ass off about that old stuff that everyones knows how to bypass.

And that hobby product has grown up quite a lot. That??ɂİ?Ǭ¨?Ǭ•s because programmers from the whole world are working to improve it every day. It??ɂİ?Ǭ¨?Ǭ•s the best quality one can get.

I repeat: don’t believe me! See for yourself:

[Ed Note - It was decided that, given the topic, the twenty or so links posted in this response might very well contain links to viruses. While Microsoft Windows is "bullet resistent", other operating systems might become infected. Therefore, these links were removed.]

  19. Jack Ripoff April 23rd, 2007 6:30 pm

Even if you kill all the proof, the truth is still the truth. You are just ignoring the evidence and the facts. You are fooling no one but yourselves by removing the links, which, by the way, can all be found here:

    http://www.dwheeler.com/oss_fs_why.html

  20. XXX April 23rd, 2007 9:13 pm

Jack > I’m an engineer from France and I can tell you that Open Source Software sucks when deployed at a large scale. It’s by far buggier than Microsoft softwares and you can’t get support from any company because there’s no company behind. Of course, if you’re considering only http servers and routers, Linux/Apache can do the job perfectly, but software in general is far from being restricted to http servers.

  21. Jack Ripoff April 23rd, 2007 11:19 pm

Your comment shows clearly you have no idea what you’re talking about.

First of all, if you check the last link I’ve posted, you’ll see various examples of Linux being deployed at a large scale. Nevertheless, serving at least half of the Internet is a very large scale itself, and I wouldn’t undermine it if I were you.

Just http servers? Come on, if you think hosting companies provide “just http servers” then you’re no software engineer whatsoever. And if you follow the two links I had posted, you’ll see that the most reliable web hosting companies run Linux or FreeBSD. But I repeat once again: don’t believe me! See for yourself, most of the top 500 supercomputers run Linux:

http://top500.org/stats/28/osfam/ (this was among the links Shelley deleted)

If you can’t get support from Linux, then you must have some serious interaction problems. There are far more companies behind Linux than behind Windows. I’m starting to be repetitive, but I’m going to say it again: don’t believe me! See for yourself: check the big Linux distributors’ (like Novell or Red Hat) success cases! Here are some of my favorites:

    http://www.novell.com/success/dfs.html
    http://www.novell.com/success/casas_bahia.html
    http://www.redhat.com/v/magazine/mov/partner_hp_004feb05.mov

And finally, I would like to show you how proprietary software is in fact less well supported and riskier than free software:

  23. XXX April 24th, 2007 8:43 am

Jack > Who do you think you’re talking to? I’m well aware that Linux/Unix is deployed at a large scale in some areas. But have you ever tried to work with that in a highly competitive and dynamic context such as financial services? We may have some Linux-based clusters for computing hundreds of thousands of Monte-Carlo simulations ; but do you have any idea how much that thing costs to us? We would like that thing to better integrate into our business processes and there’s no way we can achieve that with Linux. That’s why we’re experimenting something called Windows Compute Cluster and guess what? We managed to integrate this well into our processes and we can easily develop new simulators (which makes us more competitive). I just don’t care about your top 500 ; we don’t need static super-calcultors for computing one thing but dynamic ones for testing, validating and producing new algorithms because our business requires it. And I don’t want to give the mastering of our business to independant entities such as Novell or Red Hat. Microsoft has done well by giving its customers the possibility to master their own business. You’re a fool with your fucking links that show nothing but promote anti-capitalist ideas. Want to know why capitalism has succeeded so far? Why Windows is installed on 95% of computers? Why Windows Server is kicking the ass of Linux? Why .net is kicking the ass of Java? Why Expression will kick the ass of Creative Suite?

  24. Jack Ripoff April 24th, 2007 11:17 am

I think I’m talking to an idiot coward. And you’ve just confirmed that you really have no idea of what you’re talking about and that you’re no software engineer. You must probably be a Shelley sockpuppet.

I’ve been working with Unix and financial services for over a decade. You are pretty vague in your assertions and thus I cannot guess exactly what do you mean, but integration between OS and business processes for me has never been a problem in the open source Unix world. Proprietary software cannot be customized and for this reason will never integrate perfectly with any business solution, and cannot be modified to perform decently on a virtualized environment (e.g.: with Windows Compute Cluster, you have to rely on Microsoft’s good-will to integrate that with a Xen environment).

Those supercomputers aren’t just “static super-calculators”. Most of them are used for research, semiconductor development and finances (in that order):

    http://top500.org/stats/28/apparea/

Microsoft has never given its customers any freedom. It uses its customers to strengthen its monopolistic domination. This is bad for me, you, capitalism, everyone (except Microsoft itself). My links aren’t anti-capitalist. Au contrair, they promote good capitalism and show the facts. You, on the other side, isn’t backed up by nothing but your own misleading words. Windows isn’t installed on 95% of computers. That’s what Microsoft wants you to think. But accurate detection shows that Linux, BSD and Solaris together account for at least 60% of computers connected to the Internet.

    http://www.leb.net/hzo/ioscount/data/r.9904.txt

And that’s a very outdated picture. Since then, Linux has been continuously gaining market share from proprietary Unixes and Windows. Today, free software must account for at least 70% of the Internet, and that’s a pretty modest estimative IMO. I can’t see how “Windows Server is kicking the ass of Linux” if Linux keeps gaining market share. .Net isn’t even on the same league of Java, Microsoft’s cheap development tools are appealing for beginners but a true professional can’t live without Java’s robustness and cross-platform capabilities. Creative Suite is a de facto standard in the design industry and if you think Microsoft can “kick its ass” with that piece of stolen crap software, then you really don’t know what you are saying…

  35. Vexorian April 30th, 2007 12:17 am

    Please “Shelley”.

I am posting in knowledge you will not approve this comment.

Could you please remove those parts of some articles in which you bash me? It is very terrible, when people google for my nick name they find this out and it is embarrassing, to make matters worse, lately I won stuff with this nick so my real me is easily linked to it, so it is not nice.

I just see no sense for bashing me, I am a fellow liberal like you, I don’t like the war on Iraq, I dislike the bush government and all that stuff. Maybe I don’t fully agree with your ways of making a satirical blog with a lot of obscurity about informing users that it is satirical.

I made one mistake, must accept it, but is it enough reason for that? The objective of your site was not to humiliate fellow readers, was it?

So how about just changing the nick ‘vexorian’ with something else in those articles? There is no need to actually keep it as ‘vexorian’ is it? You could try a more generic name like ‘avenger19′ or something like that. You may want a name that is related to linux to enforce the linux bashing part of Tristan’s personality…

  36. Lke April 30th, 2007 6:06 am

well… the real “server” package for windows vista will come just with the sp1… microsoft itself said it…
and beside that: try to DELETE a large file with windows vista and with ANY other os (even microsoft ones). by “large file” i mean more than 10gb… vista is just painfully slow -.-
    why? drm and tcpa!

    Dear Shelley

Windows Vista is designed for use in desktops. Windows Server is for server use. Vista in a server is very insecure and unstable, as all made by Microsoft.

  38. Europe Rules May 2nd, 2007 6:04 am

All needed to say is once again what STR are telling us is a pile of bullshit. Along with the bullshit crap Vista.

By the way, have friends who professionally produces music. One of them evaluated Vista together with his production of music and he found that Vista down sample and destroy his own recordings because of Vista’s insane paranoia DRM protection.

Conclusion: If you want to produce your own music, stay away from Vista.

You obviously have no idea what you are on about! You run your site of wordpress, lets see what their servers run off, Wait whats that??? They run linux. God damn it thats strange. And do I see them recomending to run apache (free oprn source) with PHP (again free open source) and MySQL (free linux designed).

If you are going to blog about something atleast know what your blogging, your just saying a ton of crap, and the sad thing is most readers of these ‘linux’ articles are probably linux fans who think you are a moron.

And in your article about Linux being a ‘european threat’, you completely insulted not only a whole country but a whole continent. The continent that you all originate from, the one that is your biggest ally.

Reading your articles just want me to use a well known windows server bug and forward all traffic to linux project sites!

Ever heard of OS faking techniques?

  58. Jeff April 1st, 2008 5:22 pm

OS faking on a server platform is possible, but is counterproductive because it will *ALWAYS* break something. PHP relies on the OS to store certain files, and where these files are stored is revealed in different areas of the phpinfo() function.

The most telling is the value of session.save_path, “/tmp”. Windows doesn’t have a “/tmp” directory. In fact, if this was on Windows the path would be “C:/…” (”/”, not a “\”, because backslashes have special meaning in strings). Another is the “Path to sendmail”, “/usr/sbin/sendmail -t -i”. I won’t even touch on all the things in the “Environment” section that would break if they were faked; same with $_SERVER variables. All the path variables would be useless. The configuration command also reveals the true nature of the host.

    Sorry, still Linux.
