“and remember, god loves you and santa loves you.”

well, to put god and santa on the same level pretty much makes my opinion about STR. believe in what and who ever you want, but dont blame the adults for not believing in the same things

Well aint that a crock of horse doo-doo? (Pardon my French). Me and Mavis aint been to a movie since The Sound of Music and I forgot how many years ago that was. Hollywood is controlled by commies and athiests and homos and lezbos and p.c. weenie vegetarians. It dont surprise me a bit that they are trying to poison the minds of our impressonable young people and turn them into a bunch of devil worshipping sex maniac rap stars and homos and lezbos. If that movie ever plays in this town I will be down there picketing it from day one. Thats all she wrote.

The movie being critizised by people like Billy and Sedgewick is yet one more reason to watch it.

Sometimes I wonder how there true Christians can swear so colourfully.
Besides, if Santa (or should I say some idiot in red costume) can’t get a good movie (amazing, finally something worth to watch) it does’nt have to be made into such a awesome thing.
People, you really should get a life.

  7. ThatDude December 13th, 2007 7:21 pm

So when are you guys gonna do a post on Nietzsche? I mean, he actually *did* say that God is dead. I don’t know if you home schoolers have ever even heard of him, but he was one of the greatest minds of 19th century philosophy, and, arguably, one of the cornerstones of modern thought.

  8. LeftTurn December 13th, 2007 7:49 pm

I have to be at a concert tonight, so I’ll do a proper shredding later…

Better late than never, eh guys? I mean, the movie’s been out for a week, but why not fight the current at the falls?

Allow me to lay down some facts:
Phillip Pullman is an atheist: Fact.
The series is critical of the Church: Fact.
“God” dies in the final book: Fact.
Pullman does not hate religion: FACT.

I don’t know how many people have actually read His Dark Materials (definitely not STR… “Ignorance is Bliss”), but they are very well written, and compared to Narnia, actually raise deep and interesting questions.

The two major controversial themes of the books are the portrayal of organized religion, and the whole “killing God” issue, which unlike most of the claims floating around cyberspace, Pullman admits to.

The Magisterium is a world-spanning organization that tries to keep thought and action clenched within a tight fist. In the books, this represents dogmatic and opressive religious institutions, reminiscent of (but not representative of) the pre-Reformation Catholic Church.

Ack! I’m running late. More to come when I return…

  9. Daedulus December 13th, 2007 8:57 pm

Sadly it will not come close to the awesome books

  10. Abbie Kaufman December 13th, 2007 10:21 pm

“Santa hates The Golden Compass.”? Santa hates ALL compasses! When he’s in his yard at the North Pole, any compass is useless! And like most of us men,he hates to stop somewhere and ask directions! It’s a good thing he installed a GPS navigation device on his sleigh! HO-HO-HO!

  11. Wraith December 13th, 2007 10:47 pm

“Well aint that a crock of horse doo-doo? (Pardon my French).”
-Wait, what? You know, it’s the implication that marks swearing as bad… sugar coating the words doesn’t change their implication… so ‘horse doo-doo’ is not only just as bad, but it sounds ridiculously childish.

“Hollywood is controlled by commies and athiests and homos and lezbos and p.c. weenie vegetarians.”
    -Proof please?

“The Magisterium is a world-spanning organization that tries to keep thought and action clenched within a tight fist. In the books, this represents dogmatic and opressive religious institutions, reminiscent of (but not representative of) the pre-Reformation Catholic Church.”
-What strikes me as funny is; the movie is bad for it’s allusion… not the church for acting in a way that it can be seen as such. For an allusion to work people have to put two and two together…

Oh, and isn’t it just typical to have somebody presume what Santa would think? It’s right up there with presuming what God would think or want… it’s a bit arrogant if you ask me.

  12. All That Glitters... December 13th, 2007 11:26 pm

Don’t not see the movie because of Santa. Don’t see because it’s just not that good. The books are incredible. Billy Knob Dreck is an asshole

  13. Billy Bob Neck December 13th, 2007 11:29 pm

Wraith, y’all own the copyright on arrogant, you god-hating, lie-beral Canuck! “Proof please…proof please”. Ya sound like a broken record. The bible will tell you everything you need to know.

  14. Wraith December 13th, 2007 11:53 pm

Quote to me, Billy, where in the Bible it denounces Hollywood, and I shall type a formal apology. Ironic that you’d speak of arrogance from a website that makes claims on behalf of God and ol’ Saint Nick.

So, seeing as how I ‘own the copyright on arrogance’, when can I expect my several million dollar royalty cheque from STR?

  15. LeftTurn December 14th, 2007 1:07 am

    Ah, where was I?
Note that the following comment contains spoilers for the books.

The supreme diety of the series is an entity known only as “the Authority”. He is not an omnipotent being, and neither did he create the universe, but was the first and most powerful angel. He transferred most of his power to his subordinate Metatron, and over time grew senile and feeble; he dies after being struck by a breeze of wind, welcoming death as a relief to a tiring existence.

Meanwhile, Metatron has grown megalomaniacal, and through the Magisterium, uses religion to render all existence subservient to his will. In the end of the book, Lyra’s mother and father, Miss Coulter and Lord Asriel, pull Metatron down into a rift to nothingness, saving the Universe. The Kingdom of Heaven falls, and the Republic of Heaven rises from its ashes.

Once again, despite speculation to the contrary, Pullman states that his books are not an antithesis to The Chronicles of Narnia, although he does loathe Lewis’ novels, especially the way female characters are portrayed; he has called Lewis’ writings racist and sexist… but Pullman still admires him as an academic.

Oh, and did I mention that Pullman’s series has been selected as one of the 10 most important children’s literary works of the past 70 years, and received commendation from the Archbishop of Canterbury?

    Frightening stuff.

Reviews of the movie have been mixed. While it features first-rate special effects and a solid cast, the plot moves quickly; too quickly for some reviewers. One person said she had a hard time building empathy with the characters.

STR needn’t have got its knickers in a twist, as virtually all religious symbolism has been cut from the movie (setting it off on the wrong foot for sequels, as that’s pretty much the whole point). To many fans’ outrage, the film also ended short, after an epic battle, cutting out the North Pole finale. It’s a good thing the movie didn’t go by the book’s original British title, Northern Lights.

    Maybe that’s why Santa’s upset…

Billy Bob, I need to prove that P-problems class is different from NP-problems class (it’s a very difficult problem of theory of complexity). Do you think the Bible will tell me how to prove that ??

And by the way, if you answer “yes”, you should keep the proof for yourself, because you can earn a million dollars byresolving this problem (look for Millenium Prize Problems). You could need this money for your so-called presidential campaign.

–ya know, i think we can debunk EVERYTHING they post by asking this

“I know, I try not to overuse it for that very reason ^^”

Oh, but it’s like one of those really good books that you can read over and over. it just never gets old.

  20. That One Person December 17th, 2007 8:02 pm

    Ummmmm…. Yeah…. Isn’t Santa….. Satan?
just change a few letters around, and Santa becomes Satan.
Also, strangely, Mother in Law,when you change some letters, becomes “woman Hitler”.

  21. Bean-O December 17th, 2007 11:40 pm

I can see WHY religious groups would be pissed at this movie.

    The big question is this:
Do religious organizations (some, not all) often abuse, bastardize and warp god as an excuse to manipulate and exploit the masses?

I simply DEFY you to say “no”.

And I am not just talking about christianity, but christian sects ARE repeat offenders.

  22. Billy Bob Neck December 17th, 2007 11:50 pm

Christianity don’t do that but Mor(m)ons ain’t Christians and Catholics ain’t Christians. Islam ain’t a religion so I ain’t gonna comment on that.

So, NO. There’s only one true religion and the rest shouldn’t oughta get thrown in with Christianity.

“Christianity don?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t do that but Mor(m)ons ain?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t Christians and Catholics ain?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t Christians. Islam ain?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t a religion so I ain?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t gonna comment on that.”

    Actually that’s where you’re wrong.
    According to the dictionary
Re-li-gion: a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe, especially when considered as the creation of a superhuman agency or agencies, usually involving devotional and ritual observances, and often containing a moral code of human affairs.

    THEREFORE:
Since Islam does concern the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe they involve devotional and ritual observances and have a (too) strict moral code of human affairs making them a religion.

If that isn’t a definition of a religion, WHAT IS? No, christianity isn’t the only religion, that’s bull and YOU KNOW IT.

See? even the dictionary says it.
Is-lam :the RELIGION of Muslims, as set forth in the Koran, that teaches that there is only one God, and that Mohammed is his prophet (whereas in Christianity it’s the RELIGION of christians, as set forth in the bible, that teaches that there is only one God, and that jesus is his prophet, note that only 3 words were changed)

The whole Idea behind Islam and Christianity is essentially the same!
They both have devoted followers who think that god spoke to a person who is in their opinions righteous in every way. That’s the basic idea!

  24. LeftTurn December 19th, 2007 9:45 pm

    “…Catholics ain?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t Christians…”

Been around for a lot longer than your sect, Billy. Now, all Christian faiths spawned from the Catholic and Orthodox rites, Catholicism spreading west and Orthodoxy spreading east. All other Christian sects emerged as some variation of these two founding rites. Thus, through a simple lesson of 2+2, your faith has origins in the Catholic Church, and therefore by your own definition, is not a religion.

    Checkmate.

“The whole Idea behind Islam and Christianity is essentially the same!”

Most noteworthy of all is that Jesus is recognized by both religions: Christianity sees Him as the Son of God, while Islam sees Him as an earlier Prophet.

  25. John Clark December 22nd, 2007 2:40 am

I have it figured out now. You are actually a liberal and this whole blog is just on great big satire of right-wing religious nut jobs.

No one in their “right” mind would post this sort of crap and proclaim to believe it.

    for the record:

“Literary critic Alan Jacobs (of Wheaton College) argues that in his recasting of John Milton’s trilogy, Pullman replaces a theist world-view with a Rousseauist one.

However, Pullman has found support from other Christians, most notably Rowan Williams, the Archbishop of Canterbury. These groups and individuals contend that Pullman’s negative portrayal of the “Church” in His Dark Materials amounts to an attack on dogmatism and the use of religion to oppress, not on Christianity itself. Dr. Williams has gone so far as to propose that His Dark Materials be taught as part of religious education in schools. Moreover, authors of works dedicated to critical appraisals of religious themes in his writing have described Pullman as a friendly and generous debating partner.

Other Christian writers, such as Kurt Bruner and Jim Ware, while finding his anti-Christian position troubling, “also uncover spiritual themes within the books, which, like shafts of light, break through an otherwise gloomy universe?¢‚Ǩ‚Äùdespite Pullman?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s best efforts to keep them out. In the end, the authors argue that Pullman offers an unwitting tribute to the God he intended to discredit.” in their book Shedding Light on His Dark Materials.
