Letter of the Week: The Only Good Atheist

I didn’t have time to write an article this week, so instead I had a look through our post-bag and decided to feature some of your wisdom. Every week STR Ministries receive thousands of emails of thanks, prayer, suggestions and generous donation. Without your support STR would not exist.

I’d like to share the wise and sobering words of just one of our thousands of supporters:

Dear Shelley,

Seriously, does anybody ever cry at an Atheist’s funeral?

I mean, since Atheists believe in evolution which means they think that people are not humans but animals. To an atheist the loss of a person is no different to the loss of a rat or a cow. Since Atheists are nothing but miserable Liars, Cowards and Murderers, after all, why would anybody in their right mind weep over the dead rotting corpse, or bone chips and ashes (that get mixed together with those of others from the crematory) of a worthless dead Atheist?

And what epitaph do you engrave on an Atheist’s grave marker? Perhaps some kind of pagan symbol? A Playboy center-fold or some secular approved text like: “Here lies the only good Atheist, which is a dead Atheist”. What else is there say? Nothing at all. No last words, no last rites, no flowers, no anything.

Every time an Atheist dies, the world is better off as a result of that dead Atheist being dead, & its damned God-forsaken soul burning in the fiery pits of Hades. :)

Which begs another related question, do Atheists cry at funerals? If so, why? Since Atheists hate God, and they hate Family, and they hate America, who are they crying for?

It is true: The only good Atheist is a dead Atheist.

Daniel, to be honest, I’m not even sure if atheists would bother with funerals, burials or even cremation if they didn’t have to. Since they believe in Evolution they believe that bodies should be left to be destroyed by wildlife even if this causes a potential health hazard. That’s just one of the many ways that atheism can seriously damage your health.

This is quickly becoming my favourite re-post, and each time it seems more relevant:

A few weeks ago I saw a blog somewhere - I forget where. Anyway, there was a post and a series of comments about whether we possess free will or not (it was around the time I wrote this poll question). The discussion centred on the thought experiment of “would you shoot an innocent person, given no extenuating circumstances”? For the vast majority of us the answer is, instantly and incontrovertibly, no. The application to the free will question then is that if you are incapable of shooting this person, perhaps you don’t actually possess the free will to actively decide to shoot them. Of course this invites the argument that, “Well, actually I could decide to shoot them, I just wouldn’t.” At which point the argument can go in circles for as long as the arguers enjoy it.

Someone raised the question, “Well if you have the free will to decide to shoot, but never actually do shoot, what’s stopping you?”

Someone answered, “God.”

“And what if God doesn’t exist?”

“Well then I guess I’d shoot the person.”

Wait a second. How does someone who believes in God and God’s moral code and is a moral person, come to the conclusion that if God did not exist then God’s rules would simply not apply and he would be able to bring himself to shoot a completely innocent person?

He’s literally saying that he’s only a moral person because God exists and lays down the law. He said, right there in black and white, that if God didn’t exist, moral laws would cease to apply and he would go around casually killing people.

Now one conclusion you could come to is that this guy is a complete nutter and should be locked up in an institution somewhere. But I’m willing to give him the benefit of the doubt, because clearly he is not actually going around murdering people, and (because of God) he actually thinks that killing people is a bad thing to do. But the really scary thing is that this is not the first time I’ve seen such an argument. Over the years, in various places, I’ve seen many religious people make the statement in more words or less that if God wasn’t around, there’d be nothing to stop people doing any antisocial, violent, evil thing they feel like whenever the whim takes them.

I’ve never understood how religious people who are basically good can think like this. It seems clear to me that the vast majority of atheists (thus with no religious moral code) are basically moral people, extremely unlikely to swing at people with axes when the fancy takes them. If they weren’t, the world would be a seriously dreadful place. How can the people who believe this sort of thing not see that?

So this has always puzzled and disturbed me. Until a few days ago when I raised the topic in conversation with a friend of mine. And he had an explanation.

Atheists, he said, need to find a moral direction from within. We need to examine our own values and beliefs in the context of human society, put some thought into them, and behave in ways that accord with what we decide is the moral way to act. There are various expressions of moral codes that work in this context. A simple one is “do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” You don’t need to believe in God to think about that and decide that yes, if everyone lived by that simple maxim, the world would be a nicer place. You don’t need God to be nice to people. You don’t need God to have morals.

Strongly religious people, on the other hand, get moral direction from the authority of God. God tells them how to behave, and God is the most important thing in their lives, so there’s their moral code right there. They never have to think about their morals, because they are decreed from on high. They never have to go through a logical argument with themselves to decide that they should be nice to other people - they’re just nice to people because that’s what God says to do. If they never have to internalise their values and derive their own moral code, then it’s not even something that they realise can be done. When a person like this looks at an atheist, they don’t realise that the atheist has probably spent time (more or less consciously) to produce a moral code that they endeavour to live up to. All they see is someone without the moral code of God. They don’t realise that there are other ways in which one can be a moral person. So they conclude that the atheist has no morals.

This is why religious fundamentalists are so scared of atheists. Everyone who believes is okay, because God will keep them in line, but those atheists, they’ll probably stick a knife in you as soon as look at you. This is the problem with religious fundamentalist morals.

Hang on, logic time. Wouldn’t it make more sense for athiests to be MORE sad at funerals? Because christians believe that their loved ones are going to a better place, so they should be happy for their loved once to experience such an incredible place whereas an athiest doesn’t believe in a better place, they just believe their loved ones are dead and gone. Isn’t that more sad than someone in heaven?

Correct me if I’m wrong, I’ve always sucked in history classes, but weren’t that Christians who murdered thousands of innocent people because they believed they were possessed by the devil? Yikes, you must both hate me, an Atheist and a Republican. It’s hard to tell if this site is a parody or not, but assuming it’s genuine I have to say the impression of Atheists you have is way off.

Atheists do have values, we just don’t base them on religion, many of us including myself, love America dearly. Most of us including me love our family whether that family is Atheist or theist.

Also we do not “hate God”, we do not believe in god. Your impression of Atheists is cartoonish and hateful. I disagree with religion including Christianity, but I do not hate Christians.

Your hate is disturbing, I hope you reconsider this hateful attitude you have.

I have to agree with Shelley. As an atheist, I really see nothing especially significant about death. It’s the Circle of Life. One person dies to make room for others. We know how important that is, especially at this time of environmental crisis.

So no, I don’t cry at funerals. In fact, I have to try really hard to keep from laughing. All those stupid people talking about paradise and the imaginary sky-daddy loving the deceased so much that he just had to take them home. Sometimes, I secretly videotape the whole thing and then watch it at home so I can truly enjoy it. Military funerals are the best. THIS person is so important and special because he was dumb enough to let people shoot at him. Then the flag folding (and one fold for jesus) and guns and horns. REALLY good stuff.

As for my own funeral, who needs it. I’d rather my family just save the money and dump me in the woods somewhere or maybe the ocean. At least then my life will have some meaning and purpose as my body nourishes the animals and the soil.

You selfish Christian bastards waste valuable land that could be used for growing corn for ethanol. Or worse, get burned into smoke and ash, releasing who KNOWS how much carbon into the atmosphere.

THAT’S what we should be crying about.

The person who published the blog about atheists I must assume, does not believe in freedom of speech or freedom of religion (and I believe that include freedom from religion) which are fundamentals on which the United States was founded. Do Christians cry at funerals because they know their loved one went to hell! Actually I believe that they cry for the same reason that atheists would cry; because they will mess the family member or friend whose life has ended. Please get over your hate of people who do not believe exactly to do. If you believe your god is one of hate and anger and bigotry then I feel sorry for you.

Just because atheists think humans are still animals, it does not mean that when we die we are going to bury the atheist in the backyard or flush him/her down the toilet. Being human means we rationalize and know about these things called emotions. Animals have emotions, but humans are simply more intelligent and can think about why we have emotions. Of course people cry at atheist funerals. A person, no different than any other, has died. Their loved ones will miss them and will be grieving for a while. If you care about the person, you will most likely cry or will grieve at the funeral. If you are a normal person with regular human emotions, it is normal for you to cry when someone close to you has died. If anything, atheists should cry more than a Christian should. An atheists believes we most likely only have one life to live, and once we die there’s nothing more. After a loved one dies, you will never again see them, seeing how atheists do not believe in a heaven or hell. That should (logically) make one assume that an atheist has more to cry about. Why would a Christian, who knows in their heart they will rejoin their loved ones in the afterlife, cry about a loved person dying? It doesn’t matter if they die on earth, they will be beside God in death and once you die, they will be there, waiting for you. So the question should be, why do Christians cry at funerals?
This question is just plain absurd, ignorant, and down right mean. I am an atheist and I am a person too. I value my life, I value my loved one’s lives, and if I see another human in trouble (who has the same value as I do, no matter their belief system), then I will do my best to assist that human. I do not lack morals. I am a law-abiding citizen, and I am an intelligent person. I respect your views, because everyone is allowed to have them and should not be treated differently, but this is a very offensive little website you have here.
