Spore: A great way to teach your kids about Intelligent Design

Friends,

You may have heard of a new video game called “Spore” - according to the drive-by media it’s all about “Evolution”. So why do liberals hate the game? There’s a campaign to give it one-star reviews on Amazon.com. Could it be that they hate the game because it tells the TRUTH about evolution?

Spore was created by Will Right: He’s a major McCain backer and a true American conservative entrepreneur. That’s exactly the sort of person that liberals hate.

Alexander Cornswalled, a leading Christian game-reviewer and veteran culture-warrior actually got to play a legal copy of the game. This is his review:

“The main criticism of the game is that it endorses evolution and promotes a “try and see if it works” vision of creation. Even when not explicitly endorsing evolution it, according to its critics, promotes the idea that God was just trying different things to see if they would work…. The reality of the game is very different and I think Christians are missing out on a tremendous opportunity to use popular media for evangelism.”

Cornswalled went on to investigate the role that “evolution” plays in the game, and found it to his satisfaction:

The actual “evolution” in the game is limited to a creature surviving or dying based on how well it’s adapted to its environment. At no point in game play does the creature actually change form one type of creature into another. All of the “evolution” is micro evolution, variation within the created type.

The actual design phase is where the creature is advanced. The design phase is where you step into the role of the creator and build or modify your creation. Critics claim that this is evil because it’s not a reflection of how God created the universe. I think its brilliant because it shows just how HARD designing a creature can be.

Shelley and I will be encouraging the kids at next year’s Jesus Camp to play this game in order to fully appreciate the awesome wonder of God’s creation. We are buying ten copies of the game now, safe in the knowledge that profits from this game will go towards funding the McCain Palin campaign.

Spore asks kids to think about evolution. By playing this game they realize that nothing evolves by itself - something has to guide it. You too can use this game as a witnessing tool to help your friends and family understand the literal truth of the book of Genesis.

Yours in Christ,

Jimmy Goddard

“So why do liberals hate the game? ”

They don´t. Fundie christians do. Evolution be thanked.

“safe in the knowledge that profits from this game will go towards funding the McCain Palin campaign.”

Sorry to tell you, but Will Wright himself won´t see much of that money. Electronic Arts, his employer, will get those profits.

That being said, your creatures in Spore do evolve. Hell, they begin as bacteria and one-cell-organism and evolve into fully functional, intelligent, self-aware tool users.

Most criticism with Spore lies in the fact that it is more of a creature editor with a bit of a game tacked on instead of a game with a creature editor.

@Jimmy Goddard did you know that stupid retarded game has securom on it which has the potental of destroying people’s computers did you know that stupidass? i guess you want people’s computer’s to go up in smoke and spell will wright’s name right idiot and thank god i know that will wright is a McCain cause now he is definately not getting anymore of my money and i’ve been boycotting will wrights games such as the sims and spore cause of that securom bullshit why don’t you do some research on securom and write an article about it. i know Electronic Arts has lost alot of fans and loyal customers due to their treatment of the fans and customers.

if you want to install the game on your computer then it is your right to do so.

there is no way in hell i will buy spore or any other game made by Electronic Arts and Will Wright cause i’m terrified of securom and i for one want my computer to stay intact.

you might want to think about the consequences before installing it and think before you incourage people to buy it cause securom will do harm on your computer jimmy goddard.

as of september 17,2007 i have not bought any games by will wright or electronic arts cause of securom.

The low rating is because of DRM issues.

“a campaign to give it one-star reviews on Amazon.com.” was because of DRM, which is absolutely shitty copy protection system that eats the RAM and installs ununistallable spying programs. No wonder no one liked it.

how stupid are you?! did you played the game?! it only supports Darwin´s theory… lol you did shoot yourself in foot here!

No, it clearly supports the much more sensible theory of Intelligent Design. Let me explain: If it supported darwin’s theories the game would work like this:

    1. Switch on the computer
    2. Insert game
    3. Wait a few days
    4. ???
    5. Your single-celled life-form has evolved into a civilisation.

The fact is that the only way to progress through the game is to design your creatures. Doing so requires you to carefully control your creature’s form and physiology - just like God did. Anybody who plays this game seriously can see that it exposes the fatal weaknesses of Darwin’s theories.

Its a frigging game. Why does “liberals” hate it? They don’t. If it gets bad rewiews its because the game is kinda shallow for most part (until the space age).

So evolution creates life… but who created evolution?
I know, I know nobody it just spontaneously appeared.
Would you believe me that “spors” did not have a creator?
It spontaneously appeared on the web, Will Right is just
    getting the credit for it…

    To Sara Carter: Thanks:)

    To jimmygoddard:

You know, actually Spore does not support ID or Darwin. It is the words of Will Wright himself.
And your argument “The player is creating life therefore game supports ID” is moronic to say at least. Do not forget that this is a GAME. If the player could not construct his creature (or horrible nature-defiling abomination) freely, it would make the game worse. But as the lore of the Spore says, the creatures are EVOLVING, as Proud German said “they begin as bacteria and one-cell-organism and evolve into fully functional, intelligent, self-aware tool users.”, with each change occuring in the next generation and during thousands of years (in game years, all you see is a game date suddenly skipping milleniums forward after each change). So, no ID supporting game for you, Jimmy.

    to jimmy goddard:

you should really figure out what darwin’s theory of evolution is because it doesn’t appear that you know anything about it at all. evolution isn’t about individual beings spontaneously changing, it’s about the change that can be seen in a population over time. for example, say half of a population of creatures that lives in green grassy areas is colored green, and the other half is colored red. and say that there is some bigger monster that feeds on our creatures. it would be easier for the monster to hunt down and eat/kill the red colored creatures because they don’t blend into their environment (the green grassy areas they live in). so, the monster would be eating all the red ones, while the green creatures were able to hide and survive. Over time, the red colored ones would die out, and the majority of the creature population would be green. at this point, the creature population would be considered to have evolved from being multicolored (red and green) to just green. evolution is adaptation and survival of the fittest. it takes time and many many generations, it doesn’t just mean that things spontaneously grow limbs or change colors or develop new characteristics. people and animals alike are born (or created by God, if you will), a little differently. some may be smarter, some may look different, some may act different, etc, and according to who got what little modifications, some will survive better in their surroundings, and will therefore live longer than the others, thereby being able to reproduce more, and ensuring that the future generations of the their population inherit their advantageous variations.

so really, even if you believe that God created humans the way we are and we didn’t evolve from apes, the idea is still the same: beings don’t change spontaneously, they have certain adaptations or variations that help them survive in their environment, and over time, those that survive will define the characteristics of future populations.

as i understand it, in this game you’re designing some sort of creature character, and if that character survives you win, if it dies you lose. well, that character doesn’t spontaneously change, nor does it reproduce. it just exists on its own, and therefore doesn’t disproves Darwin’s theory of evolution. if anything, it supports the theory because a badly adapted creature won’t survive, whereas a well adapted one will.

….seriously? This game is getting bad reviews on amazon because, the game incorporates a draconian DRM system that requires you to activate over the internet, and limits you to a grand total of 3 activations. If you reach that limit, then you’ll have to call EA in order to add one extra activation. That’s not as simple as it sounds, since when you reach that point EA will assume that you, the paying customer, are a filthy pirating thief. You will need to provide proof of purchase, reasons why the limit was reached, etc, etc (it has all happened before with another recent EA product, Mass Effect). EA, of course, is not obligated to grant you that extra activation or even provide that service. In a couple of years they might very well even shut down the general activation servers, because “it’s not financially feasible” to keep them running. What you will be left with is a nice, colorful $50 coaster. And you will be required to pay for another copy/license if you want to continue playing. Aside from that there is also the fact that this game is really nothing more than 4 pre-existing games and the creature creator.

Pretty ironic that STR supports a game that comes with DRM, a viral program(by legal definition, it is a virus) that prevents the game from being installed more than 3 times ON THE SAME COMPUTER. Plus, it also blocks any form of copying a DVD, CD, etc. Even legitimately. There have even been 2 class action lawsuits filed over it, and for a damn good reason(since the consumer receives NO warning that it comes with secuROM, and it’s incredibly hard to remove, since it goes in to your Operating System).

BTW Proud German, you are right about the bad reviews about it being a cheap game (Which it is), but the DRM is the main reason that it’s being bashed to bits on Amazon.

Hi - in the early 60ies my parents put me into a convent school, nevertheless we learned the evolution plan in this school as well (We learned both, Bible story and Evolution, this was not in contrast). In Europe science and church has a peace agreement since some decades. Later I was studing marine biology for a while and the evolution and development of species is an important part of this subject matter.

The evolution of the species is based on observations, studies, fossils and so on. Historical geology shows us, how old the earth actually is.
If Intelligent Design or Creationism would be the only truth, they would teach it on every university all over the globe, but they don`t - because the Bible Story has nothing to do with science. Except you study theology or Bible history.
The Bible is a book for us to improve our morals. If I want to know something about prehistoric times (like dinosaurs, early mammals, iceages, stoneage and so on) I read scientific books, and not the Bible.
I agree, the Bible is the most important book for Christians. But if someone is just a little bit educated, he will realize, the earth must be older than 6000 years. The geological formations, which we can find in the mountains, at the coast, on rocks and so on, this must be older than a couple of thousend years. The geologic time scale tells us, how old the earth actually is.

The first time in my life I heared about people, who still believe in creationism (Bible story). I thought, the last people believed in it 100 years ago, but not nowadays - this really shocked me. Much more astonished I was about the people in the States. For me, the USA was the first land in science and investigations. I growed up in the 60ies, with the run to the moon. As the first rockets left the earth and as the first man landed on the moon summer 69. The USA was the land with the best scientists, best universities - therefore I thought, also the people must be best educated. But I was wrong.
As I heared about ID the first time, my first thought strucked me: How do dinosaurs fit with the Bible?
Since some decades scientists know very exactly, how life on earth began - and the reason, why we have such a high number of different species.

Hi Kate - I agree total and you explained it well. I was reading a lot about the evolution plan and the prehistory is one of my hobbies. The big problem is, these people are total uneducated, therefore it is impossible to explain them any subject, because they have an extreme poor general knowledge - no basic knowledge.
Many times before I told Jimi: If I want to criticize something, before I must know as much as possible (to get informations - most important are different informations!!)otherwise every kind of discussion is senseless.
Ok - sometimes they even look for informations - but in the Bible only or they ask their pastor, to take care, if it really goes along their Bible story. And this makes it so difficult to explain them scientific subjects.

I am from Central Europe and I have seen in the States, you have a high number of great scientists and universities in the States. For me in the 60ies and 70ies, the States was the number one in science and investigations (the run to the moon, rocket science). Unfortunatelly most of the people in the States are not good educated - this makes me sad!
They have a lot of schools, universities and the best books to learn - to study - to read - there are highly intelligent people in the US - but many US people dislike them, cause they claim, natural scientists are godless. “All we have to know we can read in the Bible”.
This is the most ignorant statement - really. They just believe in their American Bible only - which is just one single translation of Bible Books and Scrolls. They can study the Bible Books for instant (it is very interesting!!) - there are a lot of different translations - for example, the ancient Greek translation was one of the first Bible books - or the Dead Sea scrolls - which belongs to the oldest Bible text - and so on.
They just read always the same - and this makes really sad. If people read always the same, they will get a weak brain. This is true!
It is actually God`s will to learn and to study the whole world - therefore you can understand much better the wonders of God and his creatures - if you like.

Would just like to point out to any readers, the Amazon boycott of this game is based on EA’s reputation, not Will Right’s political leanings. Their attitude towards employees and consumers leaves something to be desired.

And Shelly, stop sending me fucking emails.
